SERVICES

The Spine Neuro Specialist Centre provides a full evaluation of you spine pain, limb weakness and will recommend relevant investigations and scans to determine the cause of your symptoms. Evidence based treatment will be recommended, comprising of medication and surgery when necessary.

FULL EVALUATION OF PAIN

  • We will provide full evaluation of patient's pain

  • This includes headaches, neck and back pain

  • A thorough physical examination will be done to determine the cause, and if necessary additional X-rays tests may be ordered

EVALUATION OF HAND AND LEG WEAKNESS

A thorough neurological examination will be done to assess the cause of the limb weakness, and additional tests may be ordered(eg.MRI scans).

SPINE CONDITIONS

NECK PAIN, AND CERVICAL SPONDYLOSIS (DISC DEGENERATION)

One of the commonest reasons to see a spine specialist is for neck pain. Sometimes the neck pain shoots down to the arm. Common causes include neck sprain due to an injury, but spine degeneration (spondylosis) can also be the cause. ‘Wear and Tear’ of the cervical disc (the ‘shock absorber’ of the neck can occur with age, and this can cause neck pain and pinching of the spinal nerves.
Sometimes, this can get worse with pressure on the important spinal cord, which controls power in the hands and legs. Patients can have clumsiness of the fingers, and walking difficulties.

Many patients have had severe pain for many months, so we have come up with effective treatment methods-such as medications, and specialised therapy. If the patient's pain is significant, we can also use minimally invasive spine injection therapy or surgery.

Advances in surgery have been developed over the years. Newer spine operation methods are now available such as disc replacement. [Link] This can be done in selected cases, to allow for good neck movement after surgery, and an earlier return to normal working life.

BACK PAIN AND LUMBAR SPONDYLOSIS

Lumbar disc degeneration and ‘slipped disc’ can cause pressure on spinal nerves. Patients can have severe back and leg pain when they walk. This can affect work and their lifestyle activities. We offer the full range of treatment, ranging from non-surgical treatment, spine injection intervention(shown below),  to minimally invasive surgery when needed.

This MRI scan below shows compression of the spinal nerves in the lumbar spine. The patient underwent surgery and recovered fully.

SPINE TUMORS AND NERVE COMPRESSION

There are different types of spine tumors including intradural neurogenic tumors and spine metastasis from other tumors of the body. Spine tumors can cause compression of the nerves and limb weakness if untreated. We have a wide range of treatments for spine tumors including medication, radiation, and surgical excision.(Link)

HYDROCEPHALUS TREATMENT INCLUDING SHUNTS

MRI of a child with hydrocephalus. Hydrocephalus is a common condition in children and adults. It can be congenital(present at birth) or acquired later on in life. Effective treatment is available such as VP Shunts. Newer endoscopic minimally invasive surgery such as endoscopic third ventriculostomy procedures are also available. [Link]

CHILDREN'S BIRTH SPINE PROBLEMS

Such as spina bifida(including myelomeningoceles), spinal lipomas and tethered cords.

BRAIN TUMORS

Brain tumors can be primary(growing from the brain or covering of the brain). They can also spread from other parts of the body to the brain(secondary metastasis). We have newer treatment options such as radiosurgery, and endoscopic surgery. These have improved the success rate of treatment.
