Updates on Spinal Tumour Treatment
SPINAL TUMORS
Spinal tumors are a growth of cells(mass or lump) in or surrounding the spinal cord. The commonest spinal tumors are spine metastasis which are tumors which have spread from other parts of the body(eg.Lung) to the spine bones. These are called secondary tumors. Primary spinal tumors originate from the spinal cord or spinal nerves. These are also called intradural tumors. They are within the covering of the spinal cord(dura). Some of these tumors stay the same size, but some can enlarge over time and press on the spinal cord and nerves, resulting in weakness of the hands and legs of a person. Other symptoms include abnormal sensations in the limbs such as numbness and tingling. In Dr Raj’s experience, early diagnosis by a doctor is important. Tests and Investigations can be ordered. These include Magnetic Resonance Imaging Scans(MRI). There are now effective types of treatment available, including non-surgical and surgical. Advances in treatment have improved the surgical results of spinal tumor surgery.(Link)
